Etizolam (marketed under Etinex, Etizest, Etilaam, Etizex, Depas, Sedekopan, Pasaden and Atizolm brand names, is a thienodiazepine derivative that serves as a benzodiazepine analog. The structure of the etizolam molecule is distinct from traditional benzodiazepines; it features a thiophene ring in place of the benzene ring, with a triazole ring fused to it, classifying it as a thienotriazolodiazepine.
Despite being a thienodiazepine, etizolam is clinically categorized as a benzodiazepine due to its mechanism of action. It operates through the benzodiazepine receptor, directly targeting GABAA allosteric modulator receptors, which are crucial for its therapeutic effects.
Etizolam exhibits a range of properties, including anxiolytic, amnesic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant effects. These characteristics make it a versatile medication in treating various conditions.
Etizolam was patented in 1972 and received its first medical approval in Japan in 1984, marking its entry into the pharmaceutical market.
